Performance Appraisal And Compensation Evaluation

Introduction My topic is performance appraisal and compensation. This topic is something that we often deal with where I work and there are huge inconsistencies throughout the department. It is also something that I am very passionate about. Managers have a tendency to evenly distribute compensation, just to keep everyone on the same level. My purpose through this paper is to argue that employees deserve to be judged ethically and consistently . They should be recognized, and encouraged through performance appraisals to show that their work is appreciated. Body At work ethics are a part of almost everything we do, this is especially true of performance evaluations. It is very important to approach performance evaluations in an ethical manner as to avoid letting personal or other irrelevant issues cloud the issues at hand. That being said there is more than one type of ethics that you can apply to performance evaluations. I will provide an overview of the types of ethics I will use and evaluate the ways in which the use of these ethics would be practical in relation to a performance evaluation. According to Gilbert (2012), â€Å"Normative ethics prescribes what people should do.† (p. 25) In other words normative ethics is black and white in that there is what is right and what is wrong and there is no grey area. The other form of ethics I will be using is called utilitarianism.
